Steps Challenge Week 1 by Lee Whitehead
Last week saw the start of the Paramount Steps Challenge, with all of us split into two teams of five. Team Lee consists of yours truly, Karen, Christine, Martin and Gina. Team Tom includes the man himself, Julie, Claire, Sarah and Suzanne.
It would be fair to say that our team is the more experienced of the two, but what we lack in youthful vigour we more than make up for in enthusiasm and stamina. The young sprites in Team Tom are like a bunch of battery-powered hares, going off like the clapper at break neck speed. But speaking as chief tortoise, I’m confident that slow and steady will win the race. This is a marathon and not a sprint. Or a snickers.
Top marks go to Claire and Karen as top-steppers for their teams. Claire seems to be permanently stuck on 2x fast forward, like a broken sky+ remote, whilst Karen has adopted the “why take one normal stride when ten really fast ones will do”. I, on the other hand, have only one speed, that of an arthritic three-legged donkey. I’m hoping, though, that by Week 4 I might be able to break into a trot.
So as we begin Week 2, Team Tom has amassed 564,107 steps compared to our 532, a lead of around 32,000 steps.
But there’s a long, long, long way to go. And don’t my feet know it.
